The flow of messages is a bit fast and furious. The Legacy mailing list is quite good as long as you dump the messages to a folder to read later.

Some of the weekly webinars are very interesting too, they are typically free to view for a week or so after being made, then they become paid content. I wish I'd done this much earlier as I've gained quite a few insights and heaps of tips in both using Legacy and research. It's only in recent times that I've read some of the help file, or watched a few of the free training videos linked off the start page of Legacy. I've been a Legacy user for a few years now, I've used the deluxe paid version for the additional features with every release where it has been on offer. Gramplets used - Relations, To do notes, Date Calculator The parents can be created and linked in one step by double clicking on the empty parents box.Įxporting from Legacy to Gedcom for Gramps import - use Gedcom 5.5.1 for the least errors If I was starting from scratch with Gramps, I'd suggest creating the first individual (usually the user) from the People bar, and then switching to the Charts view. Source citations are easy to add, use and organise once you get into it. a birth has to be captured as an event rather than just a field against an individual. I'd agree it isn't the easiest for a beginner to genealology, but it encourages the best practices - e.g. I've seen a few comments online about Gramps being a hard program to use, especially for beginners. Seems to be far better than the source clipboard that I liked in Legacy.

I've used it to produce the online version of the family tree - see Gramps also has a clipboard that allows drag and drop of just about anything - so I can easily use one citation, drag it onto the clipboard, and re-use the citation for the other events and people it is used for. The MRIN number is in view everywhere it is needed which fit in perfectly with my filing system. Now I have started using Gramps, I quite like it. Transcript - used for transcribing records eg have a jpg of a census record in a split window with a basic word processor in the other half of the window. Able to display the MRIN on the main screens (I use MRIN for filing).Easy method of copying an event and sources between multiple people.A couple of gaps at the moment that Legacy has and RM doesn't have: Has a forum available which seems a big leap over some others. Much nicer interface than Legacy which is my main attraction. RootsMagic - currently kicking around the idea of moving to this package.Another good feature is that MRIN is shown in the main view of a family which fits in with my filing system Great timeline view added in the new version 8.0.

I liked it alot until I tried the early Legacy I don't think this could even do sources. Sure gedcom can be used but there is always loss of something. One of the barriers with changing programs is the transfer of information between programs. Since I started the project I have used quite a few family tree programs, and have settled on Legacy.
